Restorative Justice (RJ) is a model of addressing conflicts bewteen memebers of a community. It is rooted in Indigenous philosophies and traditions that define justice in terms of our relationships with each other and our community.
The adult restorative justice program responds to harms that happen within the community. Our work is anchored in supporting clients with moving forward, setting goals, and creating plans for repair. In partnership with Lane County District Attorney, defendants who plead into this program go through a series of dialogues in which we collaboratively explore what full accountability means for their situation. Our program aims to address needs and impacts while gathering community feedback. This program has an excellent track record of diverting individuals away from sentencing and toward meaningful community integration. RJ also takes seriously the needs of victims and gives them a strong voice in how the harm is repaired.
Restorative Practices in Schools: acknowledging that exclusionary discipline practices do little to solve the root causes of conflict. CDR works with school districts (teachers, staff administrators and students) across the region to introduce restorative practices to their school communities. Our approach focueses on building both interpersonal skills and institutional structures with multi-tiered systems of support. These practices offer potent skills and empower school community members to participate in solution and reform institutional flaws that perpetuate inequities.
Victim/Offender Dialogue: the court-adjacent part of our programming works in partnership with county-based juvenile justice divisions in which we receive referrals from juvenile departments and engage with youth clients to help them explore and address core needs that led them to us, work with those most directly impacted by youth crime and other behaviors to gain their input, and facilitate the creation of a repair plan to address the harms.
